Chapter Seven

Tapping his fingers lightly on the steering wheel, Beau made his way downtown. Cities weren’t his thing as a rule. He preferred the wide open spaces, the smell of horses and dirt, and the camaraderie of people who worked like he did. But whenever he was in Dallas, there were a few people he got together with. Logan Maxwell had been his friend way back in high school and they got together to shoot the shit at least once a year. Of all things for Logan to do, he’d become a police detective. Beau had no doubt he was good at his job. As long as he’d known him, Logan was the type to spot things others couldn’t see. He could only imagine criminals must hate it when the man was on their case.

Logan was busier than he was, so they’d agreed to meet for coffee. He had to travel several blocks before finally finding a car park with enough headspace to take his truck. “It’s fucking Dallas. You’d think they’d be prepared for it.” He got out and headed back toward the coffee shop. The hot summer sun combined with the humidity already had his clothes clinging to him like a second skin. Just one of the things he didn’t miss about Dallas. Beau loved Texas, but he had never been a fan of humidity.

The café was bustling with people when he walked in, though most seemed to be to-go orders. One quick glance told him Logan hadn’t arrived. He strode up to the barista and smiled. She sent a flirty smile back. “Give me a large black coffee.” Beau knew the lingo. It had been drummed into him over the years, but he steadfastly refused to use it. Kendrick could rattle off an order that sounded far more complicated than a coffee should be, but he stuck to plain, simple, black coffee.

After getting his coffee and a piece of pound cake, he slid into a booth and waited. At the exact time he and Logan had planned to meet, the man stepped inside the café. In jeans and a suit jacket, he looked every inch a police detective. He glanced around and grinned when he spotted Beau. Two fingers held up to say he’d be over in a minute, Logan went up to the barista and ordered his coffee. “Quad tall macchiato.” Beau would have to tease him about that.

As he slid into the booth across from Beau, he cocked a brow. “Quad tall macchiato?”

Logan snorted before taking a sip. “I suffer through shitty department coffee twenty hours a day. If I’m spending the money for a high priced java, it’s going to be fun and get my motor going.”

“Point,” Beau said with a chuckle. “So, detective, how are things?”

“It’s Dallas. It’s summer. The weirdos are out in force. How about you? How’s life for a bronc rider?”

Beau took a sip of his coffee before he replied, forcing himself not to drop the Gs. “It’s getting old.” Logan didn’t say anything.
